Saw Palmetto

Overview

Saw palmetto is a small palm native to the southeastern United States. The dark berries are used medicinally.

Modern herbal use is best known for urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Traditional uses

  • Commonly used in standardized extracts for urinary flow and night-time urination related to BPH.
  • Traditional use also included general support during urinary tract discomfort.

Preparation

  • In practice, saw palmetto is typically taken as a standardized extract rather than as a tea.
  • A widely used regimen in studies is 320 mg/day of berry extract (follow product labeling and clinician advice).

Safety notes

  • If you have prostate cancer risk or any hormone-sensitive condition, consult a clinician before use.
  • Possible side effects: mild stomach upset. Stop use before surgery unless advised otherwise (bleeding risk is uncertain).
