Linden
A safety-first overview of traditional uses, simple preparation methods, and key precautions.
What it is
Linden (Tilia spp.) refers to several closely related trees whose fragrant flowers are commonly used as linden blossom. The dried flowering clusters are the traditional herbal material.
A note on linden charcoal
Historically, linden wood has been used to make medicinal charcoal (Carbo Tiliae) as an adsorbent. Modern medical practice more commonly uses activated charcoal preparations for toxin binding under appropriate guidance.
Traditional uses
Linden blossom tea is traditionally used for colds, influenza-like symptoms, fever, and dry tickly cough, often as a warming, sweat‑promoting drink. Folk use also includes mild support for digestion (cramps), urinary flow, and gargles/rinses for mouth and throat irritation. Externally, compresses and baths are mentioned in traditional practice for comfort.
How it is commonly prepared
- Tea (infusion): Steep 1 teaspoon of dried linden blossom in ~150 ml hot water for about 5 minutes; drink warm.
- Inhalation: The same infusion can be used for steam inhalation (carefully, to avoid burns).
- Rinse/gargle: Use a cooled infusion for mouth and throat rinsing.
- Compress: Apply a cooled infusion on a clean cloth to the area as needed.
Safety and precautions
- Avoid prolonged, continuous use. Traditional sources warn that frequent long-term use may be stimulating to the nervous system and potentially unfavorable for heart function.
- If you have a heart condition or take cardiac medication, consult a clinician before using linden therapeutically.
- As with any herb, stop use if you develop unexpected reactions.
