Bogbean

Overview

Bogbean is a wetland plant of northern temperate regions. The leaves are the traditional medicinal part.

It is a classic ‘bitter’ herb in folk practice—used to stimulate appetite and digestive secretions.

Traditional uses

  • Traditionally used as a bitter tonic to support appetite and digestion.
  • Folk preparations were also used as a wash for slow-healing minor skin issues.

Preparation

  • Infusion (traditional): Steep 1 heaped teaspoon dried leaf in 250 ml hot water for ~15 minutes, then strain.
  • External wash: Use the same infusion as a rinse on the skin.

Safety notes

  • Bitter herbs can aggravate active ulcers or severe gastritis—use cautiously.
  • Avoid during pregnancy and in children unless supervised by a qualified professional.
