Blue Gum Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)
Blue gum eucalyptus is a fast-growing evergreen tree whose leaves contain aromatic essential oils. Traditional preparations include steam inhalation and gargles for upper-respiratory comfort, and topical use (properly diluted) for muscular aches.
What it is
Eucalyptus globulus is native to Australia and is cultivated in many regions worldwide. The leaves contain essential oil rich in 1,8‑cineole (eucalyptol), along with other terpenes and tannins.
Traditional uses
Traditional herbal practice uses eucalyptus leaf preparations for temporary relief of nasal and throat discomfort, and as supportive care during coughs and colds. Topical preparations (properly diluted) are also used for muscle and joint comfort.
How it is commonly used
Steam inhalation (traditional): Add a small amount of eucalyptus preparation to hot water and inhale the steam for short periods. Keep eyes protected and avoid burns.
Gargle/rinse (traditional): Mild infusions are used as rinses for mouth and throat comfort.
Topical oil: Essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil before skin use.
Important note on essential oils
Essential oils are potent. Internal use of eucalyptus essential oil can be dangerous and should only be done under professional guidance.
Safety and precautions
- Do not give eucalyptus preparations to children under 2 years old; essential oils can be hazardous in young children.
- Avoid use (especially essential oils) if you have asthma or airway spasm conditions unless advised by a clinician.
- Avoid internal use of eucalyptus essential oil; keep essential oils away from children and pets.
- If you have severe liver or kidney disease, consult a clinician before use.
- Pregnancy/breastfeeding: consult a clinician before using essential oils.
