What it is
Blue gum eucalyptus is an evergreen tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The dried leaf and eucalyptus oil are distinct herbal preparations and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Traditional-use context
The EMA has assessed Eucalyptus globulus leaf for traditional use in cough and cold preparations. Eucalyptus oil also has a separate EU herbal monograph. These monographs concern defined preparations, not unrestricted home use of concentrated essential oil.
Preparation context
Use commercially prepared leaf or oil products according to their labelled route and dose. Essential oils are highly concentrated; do not assume that a dose suitable for inhalation or external use is safe to swallow.
Quality and identification
Check that the product specifies the species, preparation, concentration, and intended route of use. Keep essential oils in child-resistant storage.
Safety and precautions
Eucalyptus oil can be hazardous if swallowed inappropriately, especially for children. Avoid improvised oral dosing of essential oil. Seek urgent medical advice after accidental ingestion or if breathing symptoms are severe or persistent.
Evidence note
Traditional use and modern clinical evidence are not the same. Where an official monograph exists, this page uses it as a primary reference; otherwise claims are deliberately conservative.
